Experience There are many remarkable folk crafts in Aizu. Akabeko is well known folk craft of Aizu. It was made based on a legend of red cows which exerted himself for the construction of Enzo-ji, a temple in Aizu-Yanaizu. The toy is believed to protect children against sickness. Okiagari-Koboshi is a traditional good luck charm in Aizu area. It bounces up every time it gets knocked down, therefore it has become a symbol of indomitable. For a long time, Aizu has been a major production area for candles. These candles are decorated with beautiful painted flowers, well-made and long-lasting. Aizu painted candles were highly prized by the upper class. Painting of the folkcrafts can be experienced at the shops below. There are many Shikki studios and shops in Aizu-Wakamatsu, some of them open trial classes of MAKIE (gold and silver lacquer decoration) where you can make your original Shikki bowls.
